Just ordered my 23 and me kits.  I'm really looking forward to it.  I am only doing the ancestry.  Didn't want to spend the money to do the health screenings right now even though I would like to someday.  But since I ordered 5 kits, I wanted to take advantage of the Thanksgiving sale.  :)

When I ordered the kits, it only asked me for first names.  Wonder if it will ask for birthdates when we submit the samples?

It will ask you for birthdates but you can use fake one.  I used my sons’ Birthdates but changed the year to make them adults.

Police have been able to serve a warrant to get DNA from these companies. Just in the news. Interesting if people are not putting right information.

Brian, not on your list there is also a family that you tested for me last year.  It's a family in Shandong.  I am still in touch with them.

if people use fake b'days
how can birthparent matches be made?

confused

Technically I guess, but I used my husband's name as the ship to/bill to, and he didn't want a kit.  So the first names I used were for me, my three kids, and one of my friends who has a different last name.  So they can't really put a last name together with any of the people I listed as using the kits.  :)

It's driving me a little nuts waiting for our results.  Question...for people who have done the test for their kids, does it show region of China, or just China?  I've been reading things that say ancestry.com gives more detail, but it seems most people in the China adoption world use 23andme.  Just wondering how much detail we'll get, or if it will be disappointing.  I might do the ancestry.com test later.

Not really but you can import to Wegene and this will show in more details.

I will show you with one of my son's results.

23andme:

Chinese 78.4%
Korean 13.7%
Mongolian 4.4%
Broadly East Asian 2.6%
Iberian < 0.1%
Broadly European 0.3%

And the pictures I attached are with Wegene.

Be aware that depending on the company you tested with, some will show Japanese and some will show Korean.  There is a confusion with the genes depending who you tested with.

Thanks so much for posting your pictures.  I think I will look into doing Wegene.  That looks neat.

I heard some sad stories of North Koreans trying to escape through China and ending up pregnant in China and unable to take the baby as they continued on. If my son ever tested part Japanese I would wonder about the Nanking massacre being a factor given the region where he was adopted from. I could never get him to spit. Many Koreans escaped into northern China during Japanese occupation.

We officially determined with ancestry kit my husband is not Native American, highly suspect family lore. I got if for his birthday mainly so I could put that legend away. We thought he was 50% Iberian but there were a few surprises as it is much less. His dad side was said to be a mess of things. If I can get over the spitting I might do it as it goes back farther than the 1800’s, what I can track through the census. Is there a test kit that just wants blood from a finger?

It said four to six weeks but it came in less than two weeks.

We have received 23 and me results for two of my girls.  Still waiting on mine and another of my girls.  Results are kind of disappointing.

Child 1:
96.6% East Asian (95.3% Chinese, 1.3% Mongolian)
3.3% South East Asian
.1% European (Broadly South European)

Child 2:
100% East Asian (98% Chinese, 1.5% Korean, .4% Broadly East Asian)
<.1% Broadly East Asian and Native American

The kids were like, well duh, we're Chinese.  Haha.  I uploaded to wegene...haven't gotten reports yet.
